What are Chakras?
At a basic level, our body is made of energy that organizes itself into energy centers or energy
wheels called chakras and energy channels called meridians. Each chakra can be thought of as
a disc or funnel of energy with a specific vibration and purpose. A chakra can both receive
energy and transmit energy. When the energy spins outward you're transmitting information.
When the energy spins inward you are receiving information. Think of how a radio-station can
transmit information via radio signals and receive information from its listeners via phones.
Balancing and aligning your chakras are vital for your health and wellbeing and often comes up as priority in BodyTalk sessions.
Chakras are the organs of your energy body. Just as your physical body has organs like kidneys, liver, stomach, and heart, you can think of chakras as the organs of your energy body. There are seven major chakras, located from the base of your spine to the top of your head.
• Short Introduction to Chakras video by Anodea Judith.
Your root chakra (earth chakra) is located at the base of your spine and has to do with
survival, feeling grounded, life's basic needs, and our relationship to our "tribe." This energy
center affects your low back, legs, feet, rectum, and immune system. When balanced, we feel
grounded and able to function in this physical reality with more ease.
Your Sacral Chakra (water chakra) is located beneath your naval in the lower abdominal area, and is linked to movement and fluidity, creativity, sexuality and your emotions. This energy can impact and be affected by the dynamics in an important one-to-one relationship. It affects your reproductive system, large intestine, low back, pelvis, bladder and hip area. Mental and emotional issues include blame, guilt, money, power, and control.
Your Solar Plexus Chakra is located above your navel and is associated with your sense of personal power, self-esteem, self-respect, sensitivity to criticism, and personal honor as well as issues around trust, fear, and intimidation. It affects your digestive organs and middle spine. Other issues related to this chakra can be arthritis, diabetes, eating disorders, liver, and adrenal functioning.
Your heart chakra reflects the essence of who you are and influences our capacity to love and show compassion, and our ability to forgive. It's linked to emotions like grief, sadness, and issues with hatred. If misaligned, there may be issues around the ability to be kind to yourself, being a pushover, and a lack of acceptance and compassion. This energy center affects your heart and circulatory system, lungs, shoulders and arms, ribs, breasts, diaphragm and your thymus gland.

Your Throat Chakra (sound chakra) has to do with personal expression through your
voice, and in how we choose to express ourselves in the world. If affects our ability to say
"yes" or "no" (our ability to choose and make decisions), our willpower, as well as issues with
judgment and criticism. Physically, this energy center affects the throat, thyroid gland, neck,
mouth, teeth, gums, TMJ, and hypothalamus. It can also be linked to issues around not feeling
heard, and feeling stifled.
Your Brow Chakra (third eye), is about insight, vision, wisdom, level of openness to new ideas, emotional intelligence, and ability to self-evaluate. Physically, it is linked to your brain and nervous system, eyes, ears, nose, pituitary and pineal gland and learning disabilities.
Your Crown Chakra is located at the top of your head and can be seen as the spiritual connector, the center of consciousness, inspiration, and devotion. This energy center allows you to see the bigger picture, experience deep peace, inspiration, trust, and oneness. Physically, it affects our muscular and skeletal system, and our skin. When excessive or diminished it can be linked to energetic disorders, extreme sensitivity to light, sound, and other environmental factors. It also reflects our ability to be fully present in this moment.
